I spent time obtaining quotes for a brand new car both online and by telephone, decided not to go with the insurance company who called me MATE and plumbed for John Lewis online. Excellent experience except my car had only been registered the day before and the registration number did not appear in the software, you cannot buy insurance if the registration number is not recognised. The online chat worked well but it still took a real person to overcome this problem...well done John Lewis lady.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Car Insurance Purchased because of recommendation as one of best policies. Tried and failed to purchase several days in advance of collecting a new car. Website requires the vehicle registration number but will not accept the allocated one (provided by the dealer), therefore unable to proceed.Resorted to phone for assistance but gave up after waiting for 20 minutes with a recorded message suggesting that the policy can be purchased online. I emailed customer services to report my experience and received an email apology for the phone delay and an assurance that a customer agent would be contacting me-this did not happen. However, managed the following day with much shorter wait on the phone, but lost the benefit offered by the cashback site (£26). Still a reasonable price but a disappointing experience and not such good value as it would have been. Please sort out the anomaly on the website.

They arrived while I was away, and both quoted £477.69. This was a pleasant surprise, as it was a reduction on the previous year. However, when I called to renew, I was quoted £538.61. I didn't receive a satisfactory explanation for the change in rate, other than the policy had lapsed.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. A difficult to understand online portal for a start. Then it took a while to get my no claims letter from my previous insurer. I kept John Lewis informed and they said that was fine. It clearly wasn’t as they cancelled my insurance with no warning. I received the letter 5 days after they sent it so hadn’t been covered all that time. Very scary and unbelievably bad customer service when I called. Disappointing service all round.

My friend advised me to go to John Lewis Insurance, this I did and got the policy at half price of what I was originally paying. Top FAQs

Third party insurance only covers you against having to pay if you injure someone or damage their vehicle or other property, but won't pay to repair damage to your car. Third party, fire and theft cover will also pay to repair or replace your own car if it is stolen, or damaged or destroyed by fire.

The most commonly purchased option is comprehensive cover. This cover pays to repair damage to your car, including windscreens, in addition to all of the cover described above.

All new Car Insurance policies from John Lewis Finance provide comprehensive cover.

If you're involved in an accident, you're legally required to:

Give your name, address and insurance details to anyone who has a good reason to ask for them – namely the other driver.

Report the incident to the police within 24 hours if you or anyone else is injured, and provide your Certificate of Motor Insurance within five days of the incident.


You should also collect the following information:

Full details of the other driver(s).

Registration numbers of all vehicles involved in the accident.

Where, when and how the accident happened.

Injuries or damage caused

Names and contact details of witnesses

Police officers’ details and report references

Photographs of the scene or any damage, if possible

CCTV or dashcam footage

If you need to make a claim, please call us immediately. Lines are open 24 hours a day.

The claims handler will ask for the details of your claim. The more details you can provide during the first call, the quicker the claims process will be.

If your vehicle is not driveable we will refund the cost of overnight accommodation or travel expenses, including taxi fares, for you and your passengers up to £500. We will arrange a courtesy car for up to 30 days if your car is deemed a total loss or is stolen and not recovered.
