What is a card reader?

A card reader is a small, handheld device that generates temporary codes which you can use to confirm your online card purchases. 


When you’re shopping online and prompted to enter a code:

1. Insert your Partnership Card into the top of the device. 
2. Enter your card PIN.
3. Enter the authentication code (this is on the Mastercard ID Check screen when you’re shopping online).
4. Once these details have been entered correctly, the Card Reader will generate an 8-digit code that you can use to confirm the purchase.


In the meantime, if you're asked to confirm an online card purchase, and you can't use either the app or SMS/text code methods, call us on 0345 300 3833. We can then discuss other options to complete your purchase.

As the card reader is not linked to you, there's no risk of it being used fraudulently on your account.

You’ll get an error message and you'll be asked to re-enter your PIN. You have 3 attempts to input the PIN correctly before your card PIN is locked.

If your card is locked you'll need to contact us on 0345 300 3833 to request that your card be unblocked. Lines are open from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.

Alternatively, you can visit any John Lewis Finance or HSBC ATM to change or unblock your PIN.

You’ll receive an error message on the merchant’s website and you'll be asked to try again. You’ll need to repeat the process and re-enter the code.

You’ll have 3 attempts, after which the card PIN will be locked.

If your card is locked you'll need to contact us on 0345 300 3833 to request that your card be unblocked . Lines are open from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.
