Popular Home Insurance FAQs
What’s the difference between buildings and contents insurance?
Home insurance refers to either contents insurance or buildings insurance or a combination of both.
Buildings insurance includes the main structure of your home, which you own and live in. This includes its fixtures and fittings, detached annexes and outbuildings. It also includes the following if they form or are situated within the boundaries of your property's title deeds:
Permanent structures and fixtures on the land, such as drives, walls, patios, fences and gates
Fixed external systems (like lighting, surveillance, solar, wind, and heat pumps)
Permanently fixed floor coverings (excluding carpeting)
Permanently fixed items in the ground like tanks, pools, fountains, hot tubs, and brick-built barbecues
covers the building, including any outbuildings such as sheds. It generally covers your home against risks including flood, fire and subsidence.
Contents insurance covers household goods and valuables belonging to you or your family, along with specific limits for money, cards, documents, and business equipment. It also typically includes garden contents such as trees, plants, garden equipment (including motorised), furniture, and other removable items like temporary gazebos, statues, pots, and barbecues.
Do you cover high-value items like art, antiques and jewellery?
Yes, these are considered 'valuables', and include items such as:
Jewellery
Watches
Paintings and other works of art
Articles containing gold, silver or precious metals
Stamp, coin or medal collections
Musical instruments
Each insurance product has a different valuables limit so you can choose the one to suit your needs.
If you have items worth more than £3,000 each, you’ll need to specify them when you get a quote.
For valuables worth more than £20,000 each, our high value home insurance may be more suitable. View our Specialist home insurance cover, or speak with an advisor from Covéa Insurance plc, who provide this, on 0800 916 6880. Calls may be recorded or monitored and charges may apply.
