If your dog develops a long-term illness, they can be taken care of for life just as long as your policy remains with John Lewis and there is no break in cover.

Dental treatment

With proof of past annual check-ups, your policy provides dental cover up to your chosen vet fee limit¹. If you are an existing customer, check your policy documents to see if this benefit is included.

Dog Insurance FAQs

When should I insure my puppy?

Taking out dog insurance as early as possible can help you prepare for any unexpected illnesses or injuries. For most dog breeds, new policies are available from 8 weeks to 8 years old. For some breeds, however, the upper age limit is the day before their 5th birthday. Refer to our Help to check if your breed is covered by our pet insurance.

Does dog insurance include my puppy’s vaccinations?

Pet insurance doesn’t usually cover vaccinations as they are considered to be routine. It’s important to keep your dog’s vaccinations up to date for their own safety. If your pet's vaccinations are not up to date, we won't cover illnesses that could've been prevented by them.

Does dog insurance include neutering or spaying?

No. These routine procedures don’t involve treating your pet for illness or injury, so aren't covered by our policy. However, if your vet recommends neutering/spaying to treat a condition (e.g. Pyometra or testicular tumour), the cost of this can be covered.

What are common health conditions for dogs?

Dogs are vulnerable to illness, just like us or any other animal. Naturally, certain breeds are predisposed to specific conditions. Old age can also bring different challenges, like arthritis and cataracts.

Understanding these realities is why John Lewis Pet Insurance offers lifetime cover. That means the length of treatment your dog receives won't be limited, as long as your policy remains with John Lewis and there’s no break in cover.

Will I pay more when my dog gets older?

With us, your dog can receive lifetime cover. This means they’re covered for ongoing conditions, as well as one-off mishaps. The cost of your premium is likely to increase over time.

How much this goes up varies for everyone and depends on various factors like your pet’s breed, age and health. It’s normal to expect the cost of your premium to increase as your dog ages. If a claim is paid out on your policy, your premium could more than double at renewal time.

Make sure to check whether a new policy covers pre-existing conditions, and if it has any exclusion periods. These can include the following:

  • Health issues

  • Health concerns

  • Illnesses and injuries which developed or are showing signs of developing, which you or your vet were aware of before taking out the policy.

1The cost of treatment for a dental condition and any related conditions are covered, so long as:

  • There is a history of annual check-ups. If not annual, then as recommended by your vet. Proof is required that any advice given has been followed within 6 months; and

  • The treatment is to relieve suffering due to illness.

  • The cost of dental treatment as a result of an accidental injury.
