How to make an international money transfer in five simple steps

Sending money abroad doesn’t have to be complex and time-consuming.
We’ll do our best to make it as straightforward as possible in just five steps:

Sign in to your account

Sign in to your John Lewis money transfer account. On your dashboard, you can make transactions and check what today’s exchange rates are. If you’re new, you can create an account in just a few minutes.
Calculate the amount you would like to send
Select your bank’s currency and the amount you would like to send. Choose the recipient’s currency you are sending, and we’ll work out an estimated exchange rate.
Enter your recipient’s details
In the next step, fill out a form about the recipient and the reason for the payment. You’ll need to have the recipient’s full name and bank details ready.
Select your payment method
Choose how you would like to pay for the transfer. You can pay by debit or credit card, or set up a direct bank transfer.
Confirm your transaction
In the final step, hit the ‘Confirm’ button, and you’re all done. We’ll amend the exchange rate and total cost before your money is sent.

You’ll receive a confirmation email from us with all the details, and we’ll even reimburse you for any charges from the recipient’s bank.

How do I register for an account?

Our International Payments service is available to UK and EEA residents.

To set up an account, you need to confirm a few personal details, including contact information and the currencies you’re interested in transacting.

You will also need to create a password, between six and 32 characters long, containing letters, and at least one number and/or symbol. The password is not case sensitive.

How are the rates price-checked?

We regularly check all main high street bank and building society exchange rates to offer you a great exchange rate (including banking charges, exchange rates, and other fees).

Which currencies can I transfer?

We trade in 40 currencies worldwide so you can transfer money to over 200 countries.

If your currency is not available online and you are looking to transact an amount in excess of £10,000, please contact our customer services team on 0330 123 3396 who will be happy to discuss your requirements.

Please note that call charges may vary. Calls may also be recorded and monitored for training purposes.

What is the difference between a cross-border payment and international payment?

A cross-border payment and an international payment both refer to transactions involving the movement of money across national borders. They are often used interchangeably but can have slightly different meanings depending on the context.

A cross-border payment is a financial transaction involving the transfer of money or funds from one country to another. International payments is a broader term used to describe all financial transactions (including cross-border payments) conducted across national boundaries. International payments can include foreign direct investments, portfolio investments, foreign aid, or grants.
