Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a good start I bought on line and were asked to supply proof of ncb which I did. I then received an email asking me to confirm I want to cancel my policy. I explained I had only just bought it and were only proving my ncb. Next day I checked my credit card and noticed that my premium had been taken twice. Not a good start!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth a change After being with my old insurer for 22 years I felt I was being taken for granted as my premiums just kept creeping up. I was already with John Lewis for my home insurance and found the process of setting up the car policy very straightforward and half the cost of my previous company. Not given it 5 stars only because I have no idea what JL would be like in the event of a claim, which is where you really need a good insurer. I hope I never have need to find out!

John Lewis were straightforward and helpful, offering me various options, all of which were less expensive than those offered by our previous insurer. Even allowing for the cancellation fee on our previous policy, this felt like good value.

This year, the renewal invitation got mislaid. When it turned up, found the policy had been expired for a week !!. On querying this, they only auto-renew if you pay by monthly instalments! What nonsense. First insurer I've EVER been with that fails to follow-up non-renewal.

You do refer to a separate website for this but I found it to be useless and more interested in signing me up for future emails. Comparing the cost of my Insurance Policy with a friend, I realise that I have paid more than I needed to for my cover.

The questions were easy to understand and not excessive compared with some sites that want much more detail. The cover was good and the price very competitive. The only downside is that the model works on the assumption you buy the same day, whereas I shop around over a couple of days to try to make sure I get the best price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Policy cancelled whilst on holiday I have renewed my policy in a hurry as I arrived back from my holiday to find that the policy I had renewed and paid in full at the end of March had been cancelled. Apparently an extra £25.76 had been added to my policy due to a claim for a windscreen. An email from info@johnlewis (why not johnlewiscarinsurance?) was sent on 30th April telling me there was something I needed to read on my online account. Unfortunately it went straight to my junk mail and I did not see it. I then went on holiday and returned on 24th May to find 2 letters - one saying that my insurance would be cancelled and another telling me it had been. Not even a month's notice! Very disappointed in John Lewis. I renewed it that day and they did refund the admin charges but I felt it was badly handled and it makes me nervous that something like this could happen again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thank You I usually use the internet and I hate telephoning large organisations but I could not renew my car insurance online and I telephoned with dread,expecting to be delayed while having to hang on in a queue or being passed from one person to another,so I was pleasantly surprised for my call to be answered promptly and efficiently. Your member of staff even arranged for a discount on last year's premium for the coming year. He was a model of how business should be done.

The first person I spoke to was unhelpful, off-hand and kept me waiting at the end of the phone while he ‘went to speak to his manager’ before returning with an increased premium. I phoned again later in the evening and the person I spoke to was polite, charming and extremely helpful. She also provided a lower premium. What a contrast within the same company!

Top FAQs

Third party insurance only covers you against having to pay if you injure someone or damage their vehicle or other property, but won't pay to repair damage to your car. Third party, fire and theft cover will also pay to repair or replace your own car if it is stolen, or damaged or destroyed by fire.

The most commonly purchased option is comprehensive cover. This cover pays to repair damage to your car, including windscreens, in addition to all of the cover described above.

All new Car Insurance policies from John Lewis Finance provide comprehensive cover.

If you're involved in an accident, you're legally required to:

Give your name, address and insurance details to anyone who has a good reason to ask for them – namely the other driver.

Report the incident to the police within 24 hours if you or anyone else is injured, and provide your Certificate of Motor Insurance within five days of the incident.

You should also collect the following information:

Full details of the other driver(s).

Registration numbers of all vehicles involved in the accident.

Where, when and how the accident happened.

Injuries or damage caused

Names and contact details of witnesses

Police officers’ details and report references

Photographs of the scene or any damage, if possible

CCTV or dashcam footage

If you need to make a claim, please call us immediately. Lines are open 24 hours a day.

The claims handler will ask for the details of your claim. The more details you can provide during the first call, the quicker the claims process will be.

If your vehicle is not driveable we will refund the cost of overnight accommodation or travel expenses, including taxi fares, for you and your passengers up to £500. We will arrange a courtesy car for up to 30 days if your car is deemed a total loss or is stolen and not recovered.
